Acne Scar Removal Treatments in Toronto

Those who have had severe acne generally develop acne scars we well. Scars and acne scars are fibrous tissues which are left behind or formed during wound healing. Since everyone heals differently, everyone scars differently. These scars can range from icepick scars, boxed scars, rolling scars and hypertrophic scars.

Icepick scars:

Ice pick scars are common amongst those who have had acne. These scars lie deep in the dermis. Due to the depth of these scars, laser scar removal with the Fraxel would be a better option verses microdermabrasion which regenerates only the superficial layers of the skin. The Fraxel laser is well known for treating ice pick scars since this laser penetrates very deep due to the fractional approach and laser intensity.

Boxed scars:

These scars usually are larger than ice pick scars, have a flat base and sharp edges. As their name suggests, they look like a box in shape and form. These scars could be formed by injury of any sort.

Rolling scars:

Rolling scars are usually associated with acne. These scars are often wide yet shallow in appearance.

Hypertrophic scars:

These scars usually form as a result of surgical procedures or severe injury. These scars protrude the skin and are often red in appearance. These scars respond extremely well to laser treatment for scar removal. If you develop this type of scarring from simply acne or a break out, you may have keloid scars.

Acne scars are often difficult to conceal and can greatly effect ones overall appearance and in turn self esteem. Many people want to know how to get rid of acne scars. At Bellair Laser Clinic we specialize in scar removal, acne scar removal or laser scar removal in Toronto.

Fraxel Laser For Acne Scar Removal

Fraxel resurfaces the skin texture and complexion by producing thousands of tiny deep microscopic columns in the skin which are referred to as microscopic treatment zones (MTZ). These tiny treatment zones are surrounded by uninjured tissue. In other words, only a fraction of the skin is targeted, therefore, the skin is left intact which allows for quick wound healing. This treatment is ideal for those with moderate to deep acne scars.

Fraxel Acne Scar Treatment Procedure

On the day of treatment topical numbing is left on the skin for approximately one hour prior to the treatment. The actual laser treatment is approximately 20 minutes. During the actual treatment you will feel a warm prickling sensation on the skin which most clients describe as tolerable. Immediately after the treatment, your skin will feel warm which is comparable to a mild sunburn for 1 to 2 hours post-treatment. Redness and swelling is common, however, the degree of redness and swelling will vary from individual to individual. This reaction or pinkness will persist anywhere between three to five days which will be accompanied by bronzing (the skin will have a bronze appearance for 3 to 14 days) and flaking of the skin. Normally a moisturizing cream will minimize the appearance of flaking or peeling. While the skin regenerates and flakes, sunscreen should be applied on a daily basis to protect against sun exposure during the healing process. You may apply make-up and you are able to shave within 24 hour after the treatment.

Fraxel FAQs

Can I Have Fraxel If I Have Dark Skin?
Fraxel is one of the only lasers for acne/collagen remodelling which is FDA authorized for all skin types. Since Fraxel is a fractional technology meaning we do not treat the entire surface of the skin, there is less trauma on the skin and your body is able to repair the area safely and quickly. We may recommend pre-treating the skin with a HQ which would ensure the safest and most aggressive treatment possible.
When Will I Start Noticing Results?
Your skin will benefit from every Fraxel treatment. Different degrees of improvement are typically visible after every treatment. Since the treatment deals with collagen building and re-modelling, it does take time to see the full benefit of a single treatment. This time varies anywhere from 2 to 4 months.
How Many Fraxel Treatments Are Required?
The number of treatments required varies depending on the severity of the condition. Those with severe scarring or deep wrinkles may require 3 to 6 treatments or more. Treatment intervals are 6-8 weeks apart.
What Should I Expect Immediately After Treatment And The Days Following Treatment?
Post treatment, erythema or redness is normally along with some slight swelling on the skin. The skin may feel very warm for a few hours post treatment. A cold compress may be applied to the skin to sooth the area immediately after treatment. Over the next few days you may notice a bronzing on the skin which is the coagulated areas surfacing. Flaking or granular peeling is common post treatment.
